1574 – Monster, Like Me

Monster, Like Me
Fact: monsters are afraid of plastic pumpkins.

“Nice Costume!”

“You’re hideous!” “Horrendous!”
“You look so gross and mean!”
And these remarks are endless
each year at Halloween.

“Nice costume!” someone muttered.
“How awful!” said the next.
The insults folks have uttered
have rendered me perplexed.

What kind of person comments
to strangers on the street
about their facial features,
their horns, their tails, their feet?

The verbal barbs, they bug me.
They sting, those things they say.
They think my costume’s ugly
but I was born this way.
