1764 – Winter in Australia

Winter in Australia
This is what I imagine Australia is, even though I’ve been there.

I Want to be a Kangaroo

I want to be a kangaroo
with happy hopping feet.
I’d love to roam an outback home
with hot Australian heat.

I want to be an elephant:
A gray, enormous beast,
from Africa, or India,
or somewhere warm at least.

I want to be a crocodile.
What scales! What teeth! What fun:
to bake awhile beside the Nile
in bright Egyptian sun!

But what I really want to be,
and where I want to go
is anything from anywhere
that’s never heard of snow.
