1129 – The Snow Day

The Snow Day
Thanks to snowmen, the school’s population increased by 130 new students, but only for a few days.

The Snow Day

The weatherman promised us “Bright, warm and clear”
so no one expected a storm to appear.
At first we were happy; at last it would snow!
But winds wild and wintery started to blow.

The roads became frozen and covered with sleet.
No buses or cars could commute down the street.
We’d wished for this weather, but to our chagrin
we couldn’t go homeward. We’d all been snowed in!

The school day had ended, but still we were there
as snowflakes parading pervaded the air.
The teachers and principal whispered with fright:
it seemed that the school was our home for the night.

Some kids were a-panic, and some of us cried
as foul frosty flakes kept on falling outside
but soon we accepted our wintery fate,
and that’s when the night went from gruesome to great!

Perhaps there’s some magic that fell with the ice;
when teachers aren’t teaching, they’re actually nice.
They made us some popcorn. They showed love and care.
I felt kind of bad for the kids who weren’t there.

Ad bedtime we ventured to sleep in our class,
but all got the giggles and couldn’t, alas.
We finally dozed on our towels and mats
to dream of our families, doggies and cats.

And so the next day when the snowing had ceased,
our folks started showing and we were released.
Our parents were crying, too happy to speak,
and school had been canceled the rest of the week.

And though the experience left me, I know,
a little bit frightened by prospects of snow,
without any classes, no homework or test,
the day was the longest, but also the best.
